- Several approved antiretroviral agents are not recommended in current antiretroviral therapy guidelines and are not commonly used in clinical practice
- In some settings patients may still be receiving these agents, either because they have been able to tolerate them for many years or because they are unable to receive recommended regimens because of contraindications, drug–drug interactions, hypersensitivity, or resistance NRTIs
