Metabolic Complications of HIV and Antiretroviral Therapy: Dyslipidemia, Insulin Resistance, and Cardiovascular Disease
Summary
- Studies undertaken in the general population have shown that thiazolidinediones may have antiinflammatory, antithrombotic, and antiatherogenic properties, although it is not clear whether their adverse effects may outweigh their benefit[Gervois 2007; Rohatgi 2008; Solomon 2009]
- Rosiglitazone has previously been linked to increased risk of myocardial infarction, whereas data for pioglitazone are inconclusive[FDA 2010; Chiquette 2004; Nissen 2007; Juurlink 2009]
- Thiazolidinediones should be avoided in patients for whom toxicities may present particular risk, such as those with heart failure
