Tuberculosis and Other Mycobacterial Infections
Summary
- Diagnosis of pulmonary MAC should be made after the exclusion of TB and other common lung diseases on the basis of pulmonary symptoms such as chronic cough and the following workup:
- 3 or more sputum specimens for AFB smear and mycobacterial culture, chest radiograph, and/or high-resolution chest computed tomography scan[Griffith 2007]
- Empiric therapy for TB should be considered while the workup for MAC pulmonary disease is ongoing
