Summary
- Treatment for MAC should include either azithromycin or clarithromycin and ethambutol (Table 17)[DHHS Adult OI; Griffith 2007]
- Susceptibility testing to azithromycin or clarithromycin is recommended in all patients with MAC
- Addition of a third or fourth agent should be considered for patients with increased risk of mortality or emergence of resistance, including patients with CD4+ cell counts < 50 cells/mm3, > 2 log10 CFU/mL blood, or absence of effective ART
