  • Manifestations of HSV infection include large, painful, grouped vesicles with an erythematous base that may involve all areas of the body but most frequently the orolabial, genital, and anorectal regions (Figure 1)
  • As HIV-infected patients become increasingly immunosuppressed (CD4+ cell counts < 100 cells/mm3), HSV infections are characterized by prolonged viral shedding, recurrent episodes, and severe and persistent lesions
