Summary

  • Manifestations of HSV infection include large, painful, grouped vesicles with an erythematous base that may involve all areas of the body but most frequently the orolabial, genital, and anorectal regions (Figure 1)
  • As patients with HIV become increasingly immunosuppressed (CD4+ cell counts < 100 cells/mm3), HSV infections are characterized by prolonged (and increased frequency of) viral shedding, recurrent episodes, and severe and persistent lesions[Posavad 2004]
