- Etiology
- Nontyphoidal strains of Salmonella may be seen in patients with HIV, with the potential for more severe and frequent disease, particularly among those with AIDS[Kiratisin 2008; Kankwatira 2004; Gordon 2002; Gordon 2001; Levine 1991; Angulo 1995; Chaisson 1988]
- Immunosuppressed individuals are not at increased risk for typhoid fever
- Salmonella spp is a frequent cause of bacteremia in patients with advanced HIV infection
