Summary

    Epidemiology
    • Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus endemic in the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys of North America and in parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean
    • Primary infection or reactivation disease can occur in persons with HIV living in, visiting or previously resident in endemic areas
    • Disseminated histoplasmosis usually occurs in people with CD4+ cell counts < 150 cells/mm3[Wheat 1990]
