- Histoplasmosis in patients with advanced HIV disease may be confused with mycobacterial infections, other fungal infections, such as blastomycosis, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Histoplasma antigen may be detected in blood or urine
- Fungal stain of blood smears or tissues is less sensitive but may aid diagnosis
