    Epidemiology
    • PCP, an airborne infection, is caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii[Kovacs 2009]
    • Incidence has declined dramatically in the United States and Western Europe
      • Most cases occur in patients who are unaware of their HIV infection, are not receiving HIV care, or are severely immunosuppressed (CD4+ cell counts < 100 cells/mm3)
