    Epidemiology
    • Thrombocytopenia can occur independently of other cytopenias and at all stages of HIV infection[Evatt 2005; Pechère 1993; Miguez-Burbano 2005]
    • 1-year incidence of significant thrombocytopenia in United States ranges from 1.7% with asymptomatic HIV to 3.1% with CD4+ cell count–defined AIDS and 8.7% with AIDS-defining illness[Sullivan 1997; Vannappagari 2011]
    • Risk of thrombocytopenia is increased by multiple patient-, virus-, and drug-related factors[Marks 2009]
