Summary

    Epidemiology and Mortality
    • Worldwide, chronic HBV infection affects approximately 7% to 15% of people with HIV including 5% to 10% of people with HIV in the United States[Kourtis 2012; Zhou 2007; DHHS ART; Platt 2020]
    • In individuals coinfected with HIV and HBV, liver-related mortality (Figure) was highest in subjects with lower nadir CD4+ cell counts and twice as high after 1996, when potent ART was introduced
    • In 2017 data from the United Kingdom Collaborative HIV Cohort, all-cause mortality was increased by 60% and liver-related mortality was 10 times higher in those with HBV and HIV coinfection over those with HIV infection alone[Thornton 2017]
