Summary
- HBV is identified by the presence of specific HBV antigens, HBV DNA, and anti-HBV antibodies (Table 3)
- All persons with detectable HBsAg should undergo screening for hepatocellular carcinoma with liver ultrasounds performed at regular intervals (eg, every 6-12 months)
- Most important clinical consideration is that persons potentially susceptible to HBV infection undergo vaccination
