Summary

  • HBV vaccination is indicated for all children and adults who are at increased risk of HBV infection, including all patients with HIV, people with multiple sexual partners, men who have sex with men, and people engaging in injection drug use (Management Guidelines)[ACIP HBV]
  • HBV vaccine immunogenicity is reduced in patients with HIV, especially those with low CD4+ cell counts[Fonseca 2005; Loke 1990]
  • Additional vaccine injections or higher doses of vaccine may improve vaccine response; however, evidence is currently insufficient to recommend this strategy for all patients with HIV[Rey 2000; Fonseca 2005; Launay 2011; Flynn 2011]
