Hepatic Disease in HIV-Infected Patients
Summary
HBV vaccination is indicated for all children and adults who are at increased risk of HBV infection, including all HIV-infected patients, people with multiple sexual partners, men who have sex with men, and people engaging in injection drug use (Management Guidelines)[ACIP 0-18; CDC HBV Vaccine] (Management Guidelines)[ACIP 19 or Older]
- HBV vaccine immunogenicity is reduced in HIV-infected patients, especially those with low CD4+ cell counts[Fonseca 2005; Loke 1990]
- Additional vaccine injections or higher doses of vaccine may improve vaccine response; however, evidence is currently insufficient to recommend this strategy for all HIV-infected patients[Rey 2000; Fonseca 2005; Launay 2011; Flynn 2011]
