Summary

  • NASH usually first suspected in patients with ALT/AST elevations
    • Currently, the only means of proving a diagnosis of NASH and distinguishing it from simple fatty liver is a liver biopsy
  • Approximately 8% to 10% of patients with NASH have cirrhosis; 39% of ambulatory and 80% to 90% of hospitalized patients with alcoholic hepatitis also have cirrhosis[Itoh 1987; Pinto 1996]
