- Thyroiditis has been reported with opportunistic infections including Pneumocystis jiroveci, Cryptococcus neoformans, visceral leishmaniasis, and suppurative bacterial infections of the thyroid[Sellmeyer 1996; Ranieri 2005; Heufelder 1996; Pearce 2003]
- Following treatment of the infection, thyroid function can return to normal
- Lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma can also infiltrate the thyroid and impair function
