- Reactivation of VZV as herpes zoster or shingles occurs more frequently in HIV-infected patients and may occur at any CD4+ cell count[Vafai 2001]
- Herpes zoster is characterized by pain and itching, followed by a vesicular rash
- The trigeminal nerve distribution and the thoracic dermatomes are affected most commonly, although any dermatome may be involved
