- Major cause of anemia in HIV-infected patients is impaired erythropoiesis resulting from alterations in multiple hematologic factors or drug-induced hemolysis (Table 2)
- Other factors leading to anemia in HIV-infected patients include infiltrative diseases of bone marrow, decreased levels of certain hormones, and disorders of iron metabolism
- Drugs most commonly associated with anemias in HIV are listed in Table 3
