Summary

  • Better diagnostic tests for TB that are more rapid, sensitive, and available at the point of care continue to be needed to detect cases of pulmonary TB earlier in the natural history of disease and before TB suspects are lost to follow-up
  • The Xpert MTB/RIF test is the only WHO-recommended rapid diagnostic test for TB currently available[WHO Global Report 2016]
    • Xpert MTB/RIF is a rapid, highly sensitive and specific molecular TB diagnostic test that has low human resource and laboratory requirements and can detect both M tuberculosis complex and rifampin resistance[CDC 2013; Bower 1995; Helb 2010; Boehme 2010]
