Summary

  • DHHS guidelines recommend that all patients infected with HIV with diagnosed active TB be treated with ART (Management Guidelines)[DHHS ART; Abdool Karim 2010; Abdool Karim 2011; Blanc 2011; Havlir 2011; DHHS Adult OI]:
    • ART should be initiated within 2 weeks of starting TB treatment for patients with CD4+ cell counts < 50 cells/mm3
    • ART should be initiated within 8-12 weeks after starting TB therapy for patients with CD4+ cell counts ≥ 50 cells/mm3 who have clinical disease of major severity
