Special Considerations Related to Aging in Persons With HIV
Summary
- HAD and, to a lesser degree, HIV-associated esophageal candidiasis and wasting are more frequent in older vs younger individuals[CDC 1998; Balslev 1997; Valcour 2004; Longo 2008]
- Older patients with HIV are more likely to develop comorbid conditions, eg, non-AIDS-defining malignancies, diabetes, hypertension, and liver, pulmonary, vascular, and renal disease[Weber 2006; Phillips 2008; Goulet 2007; Monforte 2008; Lodwick 2010; Negin 2012; Schouten 2012; Hasse 2011]
- Many of these conditions are more common in older persons with HIV than in similarly aged individuals without HIV[Deeks 2009; Justice 2010a; Currier 2008; Grulich 2007; Brown 2006; Longenecker 2009; Nkhoma 2010; Guaraldi 2011]
