Primary Care for HIV-Infected Patients in Resource-Limited Settings
Summary
- WHO recommends vaccination with hepatitis B adult vaccine, influenza virus vaccine, inactivated, pneumococcal vaccine, and tetanus toxoid in HIV-infected adult patients (Management Guidelines)[WHO ART]
- HBV vaccination is more effective before severe immunosuppression;[Kim 2008; Pasricha 2005] therefore, the authors of this chapter recommend hepatitis B adult vaccine for HIV-positive patients without serologic evidence of HBV infection whose CD4+ cell count is > 200 cells/mm3
- Vaccines generally have better safety and efficacy among people with HIV who are receiving ART and those without significant immunosuppression, notably when the CD4+ cell count is > 200 cells/mm3
