- DSP is the most common neurologic complication of HIV, affecting > 50% of patients with advanced HIV infection[Morgello 2004]
- Risk factors for DSP include advancing age; history of stavudine, didanosine, or [drug: zalcitabine] treatment; current ART use; lower CD4+ cell counts; type 2 diabetes; elevated serum triglycerides; and substance misuse[Ellis 2010; Ances 2009; Robinson-Papp 2012]
- Typical symptoms of HIV-associated DSP are symmetrical numbness, tightness, pain, burning, or hyperalgesia in the feet, without clinically significant weakness[Robinson-Papp 2010]
