Metabolic Complications of HIV and Antiretroviral Therapy: Dyslipidemia, Insulin Resistance, and Cardiovascular Disease
Summary
- Most observational and retrospective data support the proposition that HIV infection is associated with an increase in accelerated atherosclerosis and CVD events, although mechanisms are unclear[Holmberg 2002; Triant 2007; Mary-Krause 2003; Currier 2003; Guaraldi 2011]
- ART has also been associated with an increased risk of CVD
- Cumulative exposure to specific PIs, namely indinavir and lopinavir/ritonavir, was associated with increased risk of MI after adjustment for lipids and other metabolic parameters, but not NNRTIs, nelfinavir or saquinavir with or without ritonavir, or atazanavir[Worm 2010; Monforte 2013]
