Tuberculosis and Other Mycobacterial Infections
Summary
- Treatment of pediatric TB is similar to treatment in adults (Management Guidelines) (Table 12)[Mofenson 2009; Nahid 2016; DHHS Child OI]
- The exception is rare cases where ethambutol is omitted during the initial 2-month intensive phase of treatment for HIV-uninfected children with no previous TB treatment experience and at low risk for drug-resistant TB. However, because of the risk for TB resistance, most experts include ethambutol[Nahid 2016]
- Children should always receive directly observed treatment for TB
