  • DHHS guidelines for the use of antiretroviral agents in pediatric HIV infection recommend initiating ART in all HIV-infected children aged < 1 year regardless of clinical status, CD4+ cell percentage, or viral load (Management Guidelines)[DHHS Pediatric]
  • In the absence of clinical trial data for older children, the guidelines recommend initiating ART in the following circumstances:
    • In children aged 1 to < 6 years if the CD4+ cell count is 500-999 cells/mm3
