- PID refers to a spectrum of upper genital tract infections and may occur with or without overt symptoms
- Symptomatic PID is manifested by combinations of endometritis, salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic peritonitis, and perihepatitis[McCormack 1977; Paavonen 2008]
- Causes include infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, possibly Mycoplasma genitalium, and vaginal anaerobes associated with bacterial vaginosis[Walker 2007]
