Summary
- TTP is associated with early and late HIV with associated mortality of 50% to 80% without treatment but less than 10% if recognized and treated early
- Manifests clinically as multisystem disease with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, renal impairment, fever, and neurologic abnormalities (agitation, disorientation, headache early, late focal deficits, seizure, coma)
- Platelet transfusion may lead to new or worsening neurologic and renal complications and not generally recommended in TTP[Bell 1991]
