Summary

  • Primary care physicians should promote behavioral modifications (eg, safe sexual practices, smoking cessation, avoiding extreme sun exposure, and aggressive use of sunscreen) and implement regular screening for non-AIDS malignancies in HIV-infected patients (Table 2)
  • Periodic health assessments should include an examination for cancers such as those of the head and neck (including the oropharynx), lymph nodes, testicles, and skin
  • Risk factors for NADCs in HIV-infected patients include low CD4+ cell counts, older age, family history of cancer, exposure to carcinogens, and intermittent vs continuous ART
