Primary Care for HIV-Infected Patients in Resource-Limited Settings
Summary
- As part of the WHO recommendation that all persons diagnosed with HIV infection initiate ART regardless of WHO clinical stage or CD4+ cell count, all pregnant women should initiate lifelong triple-drug ART, even if diagnosed late in pregnancy or postpartum (Management Guidelines)[WHO ART]
- Preferred first-line regimen in all pregnant and breastfeeding women—including those in the first trimester—is tenofovir, lamivudine (or emtricitabine), and efavirenz
- If an efavirenz-based regimen cannot be used, a nevirapine-containing regimen may be used as an alternative but should be used with caution
