  • Rationale for using human growth hormone is the known inverse relationship between visceral adipose tissue and secretion of human growth hormone[Veldhuis 1995]
    • Overnight secretion of human growth hormone has also been found to be reduced in HIV-infected men with lipodystrophy compared with controls and HIV-infected subjects without lipodystrophy[Rietschel 2001]
  • Low-dose somatropin (1 mg/day) (recombinant human growth hormone) therapy has been found to reduce visceral adipose tissue but worsen insulin resistance in nonHIV-infected men with central obesity[Johannsson 1997; Lo 2008]
