Summary
- CPT 960 mg/day (sulfamethoxazole 800 mg + trimethoprim 160 mg) is recommended by WHO for use in resource-limited countries (Table 3) (Management Guidelines)[WHO ART]
- Prophylaxis should be continued indefinitely if there is no access to CD4+ cell count testing but may be discontinued in patients with a CD4+ cell count consistently > 500 cells/mm3
- WHO recommends use of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding in qualifying HIV-positive women (Management Guidelines)[WHO 2008]
