- Guidelines on opportunistic infections recommend patients with toxoplasmosis should receive sulfadiazine plus pyrimethamine plus leucovorin (folinic acid) for ≥ 6 weeks (Table 6) (Management Guidelines)[CDC OI] (Management Guidelines)[EACS]
- Leucovorin is given to avoid hematologic toxicity
- Corticosteroids are recommended if intracranial hypertension is present, and antiepilepsy drugs if the patient experiences seizures
