  • Several studies show higher HIV-1 RNA viral load in exposure source associated with higher transmission risk[Quinn 2000; Cohen 2011a; Baeten 2011]
    • During acute and late-stage HIV infection, when viremia is high, risk of heterosexual transmission may be increased up to 9-fold[Boily 2009]
    • Below HIV-1 RNA threshold of 1500 copies/mL, heterosexual transmission is unlikely[Quinn 2000]
