  • Guidelines on opportunistic infections recommend choice of malaria treatment based on the infecting species, parasitemia level, antimalarial drug resistance in the visited area, and the clinical status of the patient (Table 9) (Management Guidelines)[CDC OI] (Management Guidelines)[Panel 2008b]
  • Ideally, antimalarial treatment should not be initiated until diagnosis has been confirmed but should not be delayed when malaria is strongly suspected
