  • Methadone maintenance has been shown to decrease the psychosocial and medical morbidity associated with opioid dependence, improve overall health status, decrease criminal activity and improve social functioning, and decrease HIV transmission among PWIDs[Amato 2005]
  • Persistent adverse effects include diaphoresis, constipation, and amenorrhea, with the majority of women experiencing the return of menses after 12-18 months of therapy[Amato 2005]
  • Patients with prolonged QTc intervals should not receive methadone due to risk of cardiac arrhythmias[Chou 2014]
