Key Pharmacologic Principles and Drug-Drug Interactions in HIV Patient Care
Summary
- Efavirenz, nevirapine, and etravirine decrease concentrations of certain benzodiazepines, whereas PIs, cobicistat/elvitegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF, and cobicistat/elvitegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir AF typically increase concentrations (Table 10)[DHHS ART; FDA COBI/EVG/TDF/FTC; FDA COBI/EVG/TAF/FTC]
- Lorazepam, oxazepam, and temazepam are not metabolized by CYP 450 3A4 and do not interact with antiretrovirals
- Use of single-dose IV midazolam is acceptable for patients receiving PIs if they are being monitored, such as during a medical procedure; otherwise, do not coadminister[DHHS ART]
