Summary
- Guidelines on opportunistic infections recommend that prophylaxis for PCP should be given to all patients with HIV who have a CD4+ cell count < 200 cells/mm3 (or CD4+ cell percentage < 14%),[EACS] a history of oral candidiasis, or fever of unknown origin lasting more than 20 days (Management Guidelines)[CDC OI] (Management Guidelines)[EACS]
- Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim is recommended for PCP prophylaxis (Table 1)
- Other prophylactic drugs used in this setting include dapsone, atovaquone, and aerosolized pentamidine
