  • Older people with HIV often present with advanced disease due to missed opportunities to diagnose their infection
  • Primary care providers must understand that HIV infection risk assessment and testing are appropriate for all patients, including those older than 50 years of age
  • Older patients have increased rates of disease progression before the initiation of ART, decreased rates of immune reconstitution, decreased survival after ART initiation, increased rates of comorbidities, and increased rates of AIDS-defining complications at higher CD4+ cell counts than those observed for younger patients
