HIV Testing and Diagnosis
Summary
- Higher perception of HIV risk by patients and expectation of benefit from testing on behalf of providers were both associated with higher HIV testing acceptance rates[Irwin 1996]
- Remains a continued need to fully implement routine testing while not abandoning risk-based HIV testing in both healthcare settings and nonclinical settings
- Current estimates suggest that undiagnosed HIV infection has decreased from an estimated 25% of all HIV infections to 14.0%[CDC 2008; CDC 2014] as a result of the CDC’s recommended scale-up of HIV testing
