Summary

  • Primary EBV infection in children typically is asymptomatic at seroconversion
  • Primary infection in adolescents and young adults typically presents as infectious mononucleosis (fever, sore throat, lymphadenopathy). Hepatic involvement is common in EBV infection and varies in severity
  • Rarely, patients will develop chronic active EBV infection, which has high morbidity and mortality related to hepatic failure, lymphoma, sepsis, or hemophagocytic syndrome[Drebber 2006; Petrova 2010]
