Summary

  • Clinical signs of HSV hepatitis include so-called anicteric hepatitis (low or normal bilirubin, severe transaminase elevations, fever, abdominal pain, and influenza-like symptoms). Approximately 50% of patients also have HSV-related mucocutaneous lesions[Norvell 2007; Kaufman 1997]
  • Three quarters of cases rapidly progress to acute liver failure, with mortality reaching almost 90%, often because of delayed diagnosis and lack of specific treatment[Norvell 2007]
