  • Hepatitis due to primary HHV-6 infection is typically mild and self-limited, although both fulminant hepatitis and chronic infection may occur; 2 cases of fatal fulminant hepatitis in infants have been described[Niederman 1988; Dubedat 1989; Asano 1990; Sobue 1991; Tronconi 2012]
  • Molecular tests, such as PCR assays, are the preferred method for diagnosis of HHV-6 infection
  • HHV-6 reactivation is common following solid organ transplantation, but only 1% of recipients develop clinical illness[Lautenschlager 2012]
