  • HEV is the only member of the Hepeviridae family, and the virion is 27-34 nm in size, icosahedral, and nonenveloped
  • Inside the viral particle is a single capsid protein and the viral genome, a positive single-strand RNA with both a 5' and 3' UTR and 3 overlapping ORFs (Figure 7)[Tam 1991]
  • The cellular receptor for HEV has yet to be identified, and cells other than hepatocytes have been shown to support viral replication in swine[Williams 2001]
