Summary

  • The introduction of screening for HBsAg and anti-HBc has virtually eliminated the transmission of HBV through transfusion in the US and developed world
  • Nucleic acid testing, introduced more recently, identifies blood donors who are HBV DNA positive but do not yet have detectable HBsAg
    • This technique has further reduced the estimated risk of HBV infection from blood transfusion in the US to 1 in 830,000-2,000,000 donations[DHHS 2009]
