Summary

  • Following exposure to HBV, two thirds of patients present with asymptomatic infection and one third present with acute hepatitis with jaundice; a minority (< 1%) develop fulminant hepatitis (Figure 4)[Kao 2008]
  • Acute infection is more likely to resolve in patients who present with jaundice or who are not immunosuppressed at time of infection
  • Likelihood of progression to chronicity is inversely linked to age at exposure
