Summary

  • Long-term tenofovir therapy through 5 years has been shown to reduce fibrosis and may reverse cirrhosis in some patients[Marcellin 2013]
  • Tenofovir, alone or in combination with emtricitabine, results in potent viral suppression in patients with decompensated liver disease and has a similar safety profile to entecavir[Liaw 2011b]
  • The risk of nephrotoxicity with tenofovir is unknown but may be a greater concern in patients with decompensated liver disease[Fontana 2009]
