Summary

  • Women with hepatitis B who are of childbearing age are likely to be in the immune-tolerant stage of disease,[Chang 1995] with high HBV DNA and normal ALT
  • Treatment should be deferred in women with immune-tolerant disease. Other women require careful history taking and a discussion of family planning as part of treatment decision making
  • In women who plan to become pregnant soon, treatment may be deferred until after pregnancy or initiated in the third trimester to reduce transmission risk (Table 2)
