Summary

  • Patients with HBV who are viremic at the time of transplantation have a higher rate of recurrence posttransplantation[Samuel 2007]
  • Antiviral therapy given before transplant aims to reduce serum HBV DNA to low or undetectable levels. This may delay or even prevent the need for transplantation
    • Tenofovir DF and entecavir are recommended for use in HBsAg-positive patients undergoing liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma[EASL HBV]
