  • Most cases of acute HBV/HDV coinfection resolve due to clearance of HBV, removing the environment in which HDV viremia can persist
  • HDV superinfection on a prior HBV infection typically becomes chronic
  • Coinfection can be distinguished from superinfection by serologic testing: alongside HDV RNA or anti-HD, markers of HBV replication are present in coinfection but often absent in superinfection
