- The 5 key modes of HCV transmission include iatrogenic transmission, injection drug use, sexual transmission, mother-to-child transmission, and occupational exposure (Table 2)
- Barrier protection during intercourse to prevent the sexual transmission of HCV should be advised for persons who are infected with HIV and those with sexually transmitted infections or multiple sex partners or high-risk sexual practices (Management Guidelines)[AASLD-IDSA HCV]
- All others infected with HCV should be counseled that the low risk of sexual HCV transmission may not warrant the use of barrier protection during intercourse
